Forget the filler. Forget the sci-fi horror sound clips. Virulent Depravity foregoes such clichés and delivers onslaught after onslaught of absolutely stunning, blisteringly fast technical death metal that only ever lets up for the occasional spacey or jazzy passage.”

Virulent Depravity

Virulent Depravity is the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Colin Butler.  Based out of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Virulent Depravity’s mission statement is to create melodically innovative technical death metal without compromise. In their critically acclaimed debut full-length, “Fruit of The Poisoned Tree”, released on The Artisan Era in April of 2017, they did just that. Metal Injection described FOTPT as "an unholy gift from the tech-death gods that strikes at the heart of the jaded notion that this style is played out" while Trevor Strnad of The Black Dahlia wrote that it was "A dizzying romp through the cosmic world of futurist technical death metal supremacy."

Colin Butler was raised in Tampa, Florida, ancestral birthplace of the style of death metal. He conceived the original ideas for Virulent Depravity in 2007 when he began writing songs which many around him deemed “promising but unplayable”. Undeterred, Colin steadily continued writing these incredibly complex compositions for the next 8 years. In 2015, Colin brought demos of several songs to prominent technical death metal guitarist Malcolm Pugh (Inferi, A Loathing Requiem, ex-diskreet, ex-Entheos, ex-Enfold Darkness), who encouraged Colin to bring these ideas to life in the form of a full-length debut. Virulent Depravity was signed to The Artisan Era records in April of 2016 and recorded “Fruit of The Poisoned Tree” with a line-up featuring Colin (guitar/bass/vocals), Malcolm (guitar), and Kevin Paradis of Svart Crown and Benighted (drums).

With the critical success of “Fruit of the Poisoned Tree” propelling him onward, Colin has no intention of resting on his laurels. “I am really pleased with the success we’ve had with Fruit [of the Poisoned Tree], but I am not prepared to stop or take a break anytime soon. I just don’t have an off switch when it comes to writing music,” says Colin. “I am already at work on another Virulent Depravity album and I think it will be a real scorcher. We are talking way more jazz and classical influences, keyboard, atmosphere, and even more nasty riffs and solos. Other than that, I’m starting probably 4 new projects this year which will encompass a bunch of different genres. Also, I’ve been doing guest solos and guest vocal work and plan to continue doing so for the conceivable future. Hit me up on our Virulent Depravity Facebook page, or just my personal page if you are interested in either working with me or just chatting.”
